DEFINITION
Website development is the process of planning, building, testing and maintaining the technical structure and functionality of a website.
Modern development involves more than writing code. Architecture, user experience, performance, mobile responsiveness, accessibility, security, SEO foundations, content structure, analytics, and maintainability all belong in the same conversation.
A technically functional website is not necessarily a well-developed website. Good development also considers how people use the website and how search systems access and understand it.
PROCESS
Goals and audience come before architecture. Architecture comes before design. Design informs development. SEO and technical work sit inside development, not only after it. Testing precedes launch. Monitoring continues afterward.
APPROACH
A website should be developed around business objectives and user needs, not technology alone.
I focus on the sequence above so the stack is chosen for the job, not the other way around. Over 11+ years in digital marketing, my experience across websites and SEO is why crawl, content, and performance are planned together.
BEFORE CODE
Planning covers business objectives, audience, purpose, information architecture, content requirements, conversion paths, search intent, technical needs, scalability, and who will maintain the site.
Skipping this step is how sites grow accidental URLs, duplicate templates, and pages nobody can find. Planning is cheaper than unpicking a structure after launch.
STRUCTURE
Navigation, URL structure, hierarchy, categories, internal linking, breadcrumbs, content relationships, expertise, locations, and the blog all belong in one map. Logical architecture helps users, crawlers, discovery, linking, search understanding, and maintenance.

SEO
SEO should be considered during website development rather than added only after a website has been built.
Semantic HTML, heading hierarchy, crawlability, indexability, URL structure, canonical URLs, metadata, internal linking, XML sitemap, robots.txt, image optimization, mobile responsiveness, structured data, status codes, and redirects are development decisions as much as they are SEO decisions.

IMPLEMENTATION
Developers implement crawlability, rendering, indexability, JavaScript delivery, HTTP status codes, redirects, canonicals, sitemaps, robots.txt, structured data, internal linking, and site architecture. Search systems cannot use content they cannot fetch or understand.

AI SEARCH
An AI-search-ready website should make its people, organizations, topics, content and relationships clear and understandable.
Entity clarity, semantic content, structured information, author and organization details, expertise signals, logical architecture, contextual internal links, accessible content, and consistent facts all help. Technical implementation supports understanding. It does not make ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, or Google AI Overviews rank or cite a site. For AI-powered search work, see AI SEO.
AEO
Development can support AEO through clear headings, direct answers, question-based sections, semantic HTML, FAQ structures, organized content, crawlable pages, and a logical hierarchy.
A typical pattern: a heading such as “What Is Technical SEO?”, a direct answer, a longer explanation, examples, then related questions. Markup helps present that pattern. Content quality remains essential. See the AEO page for the search discipline.
GEO
Entity clarity, author identity, organization and location context, topic relationships, internal linking, structured information, consistent facts, and clear page relationships help systems (and people) follow the story. GEO is not a technical trick for manipulating AI rankings. See GEO.
MARKUP
Elements such as header, nav, main, article, section, and footer, plus a real heading order, labelled forms, and using links versus buttons for the right job, help accessibility, structure, maintainability, and machine understanding.
Semantic HTML alone does not improve rankings.
SPEED
Largest Contentful Paint, Interaction to Next Paint, and Cumulative Layout Shift describe loading, interactivity, and visual stability. JavaScript, images, fonts, caching, code splitting, lazy loading, and rendering strategy all affect those experiences.
Performance improves user experience and can contribute to overall website quality. This page does not promise a PageSpeed score, perfect Core Web Vitals, or rankings.
DEVICES
Responsive layouts, usable navigation, touch targets, readable type, responsive images, mobile performance, forms, and buttons should work across screen sizes — not as an afterthought to a desktop layout.
ACCESS
Keyboard navigation, semantic HTML, form labels, alternative text, focus states, colour contrast, usable buttons, screen-reader considerations, and respect for reduced motion are part of quality development.

On this website the frontend is Next.js. Blog content is managed in WordPress and retrieved through the WordPress REST API. That separation can support a flexible frontend, CMS publishing, and independent content updates. It does not automatically improve SEO.
SYSTEM
Reusable components, shared layouts, and a small design system keep consistency, maintainability, and development speed. This site reuses pieces such as the ones below instead of inventing a new hero or FAQ on every page.
SEARCH
Development is only one part of SEO. Content quality, search intent, relevance, authority, competition, user experience, and technical quality all matter. Development does not produce rankings by itself.

Development can support how information is structured and accessed, but useful answers and high-quality content remain essential.

An SEO-friendly site can be crawled and indexed, uses clear URLs and headings, supports metadata and internal links, and presents content in a way people and search systems can use. SEO should be considered during development, not only after launch.
Development affects crawlability, rendering, indexability, performance, and whether content is actually reachable. It does not replace content quality, relevance, or competition. Rankings are not produced by code alone.
An AI-search-ready website makes people, organizations, topics, content, and relationships clear and consistent. That supports understanding. It does not guarantee ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, or AI Overview visibility.
Development can support answer-focused pages through clear headings, direct answers, semantic HTML, FAQ structures, and crawlable content. Useful answers still depend on the writing, not only the markup.
Development can make entities, authors, locations, and topic relationships easier to follow through structure and internal links. That is not a trick for AI rankings or citations.

Slow or unstable pages frustrate people and can affect how a site is experienced on mobile. Performance is part of quality. It is not a promised ranking outcome.

Most people use phones. Layouts, navigation, type, images, forms, and performance need to work at small sizes — not only on a desktop mock-up.
Semantic HTML uses elements such as header, nav, main, article, section, and footer to describe structure, plus a sensible heading order. It helps accessibility and maintainability. It does not, by itself, improve rankings.
Next.js is a React framework for building the frontend. WordPress is a CMS used here to publish blog content. Neither is universally better for SEO; they solve different jobs.
Headless WordPress uses WordPress to manage content and an API to deliver it to a separate frontend. This site uses the WordPress REST API with a Next.js frontend for the blog. Headless setup does not automatically improve SEO.
A migration can change URLs, content, metadata, and crawl paths. Redirects, mapping, sitemaps, and monitoring reduce risk. Rankings are not guaranteed to stay the same.
There is no single calendar that fits every site. Dependencies, security, content, performance, and broken links need ongoing attention. Launch is not the end of development.
